The development of Mid-Autumn barbecue in Taiwan

A shared meal

Barbecue has become a recognisable way to celebrate Mid-Autumn in Taiwan. Relatives, friends and colleagues gather around a shared grill, making the preparation of the meal part of the occasion. The group can cook and eat gradually through the evening, with conversation continuing between batches of food. This informal format suits gatherings beyond the family household as well as family reunions.

The custom developed alongside changes in leisure and social life during the later twentieth century. Recreational outings made outdoor cooking familiar, while industrialisation and migration from villages to cities changed where people lived and whom they celebrated with. A barbecue offered an accessible way to bring a group together. Its appeal rested partly on this shared activity, rather than on a special dish that had to be served at the festival.

Festival setting

Mid-Autumn falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, which is September 25 in 2026. Barbecue is a relatively recent development in Taiwan’s celebration of this older festival. Mooncakes, seasonal pomelos and moon viewing remain familiar parts of the occasion.

Outdoor festival gatherings have a longer history than the barbecue boom. During Taiwan’s Japanese colonial period, moon viewing in parks and from boats joined older household customs. Outings continued to develop after 1945. Later, recreational grilling supplied another activity that could be combined with an evening outdoors.

Barbecue advertising

Television advertising helped give Mid-Autumn barbecue a memorable commercial identity. Sauce brands including Wan Ja Shan and Kimlan promoted grilling in the festival season during the 1980s. Supermarkets and wholesalers also marketed ingredients and equipment, making the preparation of a barbecue a recurring part of seasonal shopping.

The familiar claim that a sauce advertisement invented the custom compresses a longer development. Barbecue outings were already becoming associated with Mid-Autumn around the 1970s, before the best-known campaigns. Advertising reinforced an activity that was finding a place in holiday leisure. It does not supply a reliable first date for the custom.
